Prof. Dr. Mustafa Karahan was the founding director of Marmara University Sports Sciences and Athlete Health Research Application Center where he worked between 2004 and 2011, a professor at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine Orthopedics and Traumatology Department between 2005 and 2011, Marmara University Sports Sciences and Athlete Researcher between 2005 and 2012. At the Health Research and Application Center, he held academic positions as the director of the Dr. Veli Lök Skills Development Laboratory. He became a consultant lecturer at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, and has been working as a professor at Marmara University School of Physical Education and Sports since 2005. Since 2010, he has been working as a lecturer at Acıbadem University and at Ataşehir Surgical Medical Center of Acıbadem Healthcare Group.

He also occupies many positions in the international orthopedic community including being an editorial board member in Journal of ISAKOS, editorial board member in Asia-Pacific Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Rehabilitation and Technology, editorial board member in Archives of Bone and Joint Surgery, EBOT (European Board of He is an examiner in Orthopedics and Traumatology), associate member of AOSSM (American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine), and member of European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECEC). Between 2013 and 2014, he served as an editorial board member in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), an editorial board member in the Journal of Arthroscopy, and an editorial board member in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy (KSSTA). Prof. Dr. Mustafa Karahan also occupied the positions of editor at ESSKA Academy the online educational platform of ESSKA, board member of ESSKA (European Society of Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy) since May 2014 and vice chairman of ISAKOS Publication Committee since May 2015.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Karahan is the head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association in the national orthopedic community, past board member at Turkish Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy Association (TUSYAD), past board member at Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Education Council (TOTEK), Turkish Orthopedics and He was a former board member of the Traumatology Association. He is currently the chairman of the Sports Traumatology Association, TOTBID Branch.

In the national sports community, he holds positions in the National Olympic Committee Health Board, Turkish Water Polo Federation Health Board, Turkish Handball Federation Health Board, Turkish Rowing Federation Health Board, Turkish Canoe Federation Health Board and Turkish Volleyball Federation Health Board.
